How much, do you suppose, does the difference in VAMCs have to do with management at the VISN level? Big Spring and Tucson are both in VISN 18, as you probably knew.

and doesn't have the reputation of being a dangerous place for women vets.

Having been to it, and Amarillo's (once, many years ago) and three incarnations of the Lubbock Outpatient Clinic, I'd go back to Big Spring every time, were the world to end in all five flavors and me to be, again, uninsured as well as unemployed.

Don't know VISN ... can you educate me?

is what you and I might call a "region" of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the health care side of the VA. The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), the folks who hand out the compensation and pension checks do, in fact, call them regions and they're geographically different than the VISNs.

The one we're in, VISN 18, or the VA Southwest Health Care Network covers some western portions of Texas, almost all of New Mexico, and Arizona. The administrative headquarters is in Mesa, AZ, suburban Phoenix.

VISNs are the intermediate management level between the VAMCs and the national VA in Washington. Not all managers are created equal.
