This is a fascinating diary and list of comments, because I am reading the letter from the pastor and the New York Times article and there is no mention whatsoever of Judaism as a "false religion."

Instead, what he does say is:

"Within that reality, though, we do have a God-given responsibility to be on our guard against all kinds of false teaching. Prior to the events of 12/14, I had already spent hours with my own congregation, catechizing them as to the differences between our Lutheran understanding of Scriptural teaching, the various other denominations’ teachings, and the teachings of false religions such as Islam or B’Hai. I had likewise spent time with my fellow clergy in Newtown clarifying the ways I can and cannot engage in events like joint clergy dialogues (which are good to engage in), joint caring efforts (only within limits), and joint worship (not possible)."

Now, members of the Baha'i Faith are usually just so pleased to be mentioned, believing in the old adage that "there is no such thing as bad publicity."  And Islam is our "parent" religion and so we have no problem standing hand in hand with our Muslim brothers and sisters in a situation such as this.

The New York Times does get one important fact wrong, in that there is no clergy in the Baha'i Faith, none at all.  John and Margo Woodall were just local Baha'is participants in the local interfaith organizations because we like to do that, a lot.  Our Faith requires us to "Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship."

We are so proud of John and Margo.  They have been helping people suffering from violence all around the world, and with a special project in Uganda, and so were perfectly placed to be of service in Newtown, where they were hired by the local high school to counsel the students there.

How can we be enemies, if we are already friends?
