  •  Disposing of a tire is $10 here (for 1 tire) (4+ / 0-)

And that is why they are thrown in the woods by the hundreds.  Poor rednecks really can't afford to spend $40 to get rid of their truck's old shoes (Hell, they can't even afford to buy gas much of the time).

    •  I have witnessed one tire burning (2+ / 0-)

done at night when the smoke isn't evident. A bizarre bonfire. This burning was done by an erstwhile friend who served time is a US fed prison for drug smuggling. It was OK at the time as long as everybody was upwind. I was appalled.

    •  You can use old tires for planters. (1+ / 0-)

you can also stack them and fill them with dirt to make retaining walls. I have seen Earth Ship Homes with foundation walls of Old Tires.

if you use them for planters they hold water naturally, so plant mint in them or something that doesn't mind being occasionally drowned.
