  •  Foresterbob, I recc'd your diary (8+ / 0-)

It's one of the best I've read in a while. The comment I was replying to was this:

Rural poverty spawns the worst eyesores (20+ / 0-)

I come from a rural area...and when you drive the backroads and see rural poverty, you'll see some of the most shameless, in your face, "fuck yeah, I dumped it there...what are you gonna do about it?" cretins that exist on God's Earth.

TV sets, tires, appliances, furniture, toys...it makes you want to cry and strangle someone at the same time.

I used to live in Appalachia...but now I live in Oregon. If you think poor rural folks are any better mannered on the West Coast, you are wrong.  Drive through the rural backroads of Oregon and you will find poverty and the same disdain for the environment.  There is lots of dumping and trashing and just plain "I don't give a rat's ass" to be found right here in Oregon.  Enough to put West Virginia to shame.

    Emphasis mine.

I agree with everything you have said above. What I disagree with is blaming the problem on rural poverty, and specifically the type of language used to describe the rural poor, which seems to imply it is a result of their own moral failings. It is similar to the kinds of comments I've read about poor people on Redstate when advocating social darwinism. I didn't expect to see that here.

    That's all.
