    I spent my childhood summers in Louisiana, in the 70's, quirky as it was, there were no Walmarts destroying the (now defunct) downtowns.  You are not exaggerating one bit about the trash, sadly.  While away from the trash piles, say, in the back yard, early morning, it sure can be gorgeous.

      when I lived there. But they are worse off now, just like so many other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the parking lot at the nearest Walmart is always full.
