when I get my next paycheck. Domestic violence is one of the greatest social ills this country faces. 3 women die each and every day in America due to domestic violence, while millions every year are victims of abuse. Children exposed to domestic violence are often traumatized for years--if not for life--by the experience.

Programs like Alicia's Voice are crucial in helping women and children escape abuse and build new lives for themselves. Every day, victims are turned away from domestic violence shelters across the country because they simply lack the space and funding to help them all. By helping this program, and other programs like it, you are literally saving women and children's lives.

    •  you're so right at how this program is crucial (2+ / 0-)

on the very real and personal level!  helping women find safe haven is the first step, helping them STAY safe through finding jobs, legal assistance, medical care are the next ones - ones that require funding.

this program is a tribute to michael (zwoof) and kathy's daughter that is helping others survive!

thank you - with your help and that of others, her voice will continue to reach out to those in need!

called the Cocoon. Alicia's Voice takes over when the victim comes out of the shelter.

Wilson says she fled to the Cocoon Shelter in the summer of 2010 with her two daughters, now ages 14 and 16.

"When the girls and I came out of that we were hooked up with Kathy," Wilson said. "She helped me and my daughters a whole lot."

"A lot of us don't even make it out of the door with anything but the clothes on our back" when fleeing an abuser. "She buys them their medicine, provides them with money to pay their rent." In many cases "she buys them clothes, shoes."

      Thank you for your comment.

      •  Helping women once they leave shelter is so very (2+ / 0-)

important. Many women who leave end up returning to their abusers because they have few resources to care for themselves and their children once they are on their own.

there is very little resource for them. There is no child support to collect on when someone is in jail and at least in our state they just back off. When it happened to my niece she was left very high and dry, thank gawd we are a big family.

emotionally, it is difficult to find self-worth sufficient to begin again.  the support of groups like alicia's voice helps give the abused self-respect, dignity and the knowledge that they are capable of having a better life.

sadly, our "culture" for many years reinforced the lack of value of women and, now - once again - it seems we are having to fight that same battle all over again.

organizations like alicia's voice empower women and give them strength to stand against tyranny and abuse - we, as individuals, MUST be there to ensure these organizations do not disappear!
