Duty to God came first, duty to country came second.

But back to the main point...

There has always been a non-denominational God in scouting. But when I was a Scout, gays were excluded because society excluded gays, not because there was something in the Scout oath or law or whatever about needing to be heterosexual.

Now that society -- and in particular the military -- have figured out that that was wrong, it's (past) time for Scouting to figure it out as well.

that's when they came out with declared:

We believe that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the requirement in the Scout Oath that a Scout be morally straight and in the Scout Law that a Scout be clean in word and deed, and that homosexuals do not provide a desirable role model for Scouts.
Yes, they actively discriminated against gays and used their oath as justification for their bigotry. They outright said that in their homophobic view, being gay is incompatible with being "morally straight" and "clean in word and deed." In other words, "Shun those filthy, immoral gays!"

I'm a Democrat - I believe that government has a positive role to play in the lives of ordinary people.
