  •  I go back and forth with the language issue (none)
On one hand, I think it's a bit ridiculous (I'm just being honest) when people get offended by someone calling something "gay" or going all feminist 101 about how calling someone a "pussy" is an attack on the female gender. On the other hand, if it suddenly became acceptable to label something you didn't like "nigger" that wouldn't be acceptable under any circumstance, it wouldn't matter if there was no racist or bigoted intention behind its use.. So I wonder why it's different with gay, pussy, faggy, whatever, hence my going back and forth on the issue.

Maybe it's like pornography and that whole "you know it when you see it" deal. Calling a certain band you don't like "gay" isn't offensive, just because,'s not. But referring to gay people as "faggots" is wrong because, is.  <-- That's my personal guide at the moment, but I'm open to enlightenment :p

    •  Well, this issue gets confusing because (none)
the meaning of language is socially determined--so, what I think you're saying is that if someone called a band "gay" as a way of saying that it's "bad," that wouldn't offend you.  But I can assure you that if I were your friend, and I heard you use that form of speech, I would see it as making the verbal equation that gay = bad, and I'd call you on it.  And it isn't solely up to the user of the language to determine whether it harms or not--I might, for instance, love peanuts, but that doesn't mean I can insist that my friend who is allergic must, therefore, eat the peanut crunch I lovingly prepared.  Regardless of my intent, that peanut crunch would be toxic for my friend.
