(Can I just ask all those who think calling someone a "cocksucker" is a good idea....are you high?)

As a social constructionist, I'm fascinated by the way in which we interact symbolically, and the power that is expressed through language. And, like you, I will continue to "hijack" threads that use terms like "cocksucker," "pussy," etc. Such unexamined usage of language only reinforces and reproduces social inequalities.

In my classroom (I teach human comm studies) I maintain one basic premise: that communication is powerful. And one of the primary ways in which we can exercise power is through our choice of language. I simply do not want to live in a world that is sexist, racist, homophobic, etc -- and accordingly, I choose not to use language that is sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. It's a small effort on my part, but hopefully one that will garner momentum and have an impact.

I'm continually shocked and dismayed when I see the unexamined use of language here, of all places, and usually do not hesitate to make mention of it. If that makes me part of the PC police, I'll wear my badge with pride.
