first off, I loved the sentence of yours re freedom and armed occupation, so much so that it is now my sig; hope you don't mind.

Second, you use gay, whore, and bitch as examples of words with multiple meanings and argue that as such they are acceptable, in contrast to cocksucker, or Mexican.  It sounds like the general principle is that it's OK to use words with 'sensitive' meanings in other ways IF the meaning responsible for offense was not original.  What I mean is that gay didn't originally mean homosexual, and bitch didn't originally refer to an unfriendly woman, but cocksucker and Mexican are permanently and eternally linked to their human targets.  Interesting distinction.

My feeling is that using cocksucker or Mexican in a negative way is certainly inappropriate or worse.  As for gay and bitch, things seem more subjective; gay as an insult or derogation bothers me in a bigotry-alarm sort of way, but bitch doesn't.  I've used it in reference to males more often than females, and many of those cases were for humorous effect....  (Since it may bear on my subjective attitude toward this stuff, I'll mention that I am neither homosexual nor female.)

We're not Republicans -- words still have actual meaning for us, and when we hear freedom we know it doesn't mean armed occupation. --felagund
