    i was at pains some years ago to explain some things to my daughter.  we got to talking about why cars used to have fins on them and it led to a discussion that was kind of depressing for me.  i explained to her that when i was young it was common for people to look forward to the future with great anticipation of how the world and people's lives would improve.  we had our problems, to be sure, but we were certain that science and good government and well-intentioned people working together were going to create a world where poverty, racism and war would disappear and we would go on to explore space and perhaps understand the mysteries of the universe.  i went to the library and borrowed a couple of episodes of star trek for her to watch as an example of the optimism that was prevalent years before she was born.

    i still am not sure where that good will and hope went, how we were convinced that life was meant to be nasty, brutish and short for the vast majority of us on earth.  i feel awful about the world that my kid is inheriting sometimes.
