  •  This is not just a Chicago based District! (2+ / 0-)

Markos...this is no longer a Chicago based district.  It encompasses 3 counties.  Please do your homework.

    •  77% of the population (9+ / 0-)

Of IL-02 is based in Cook County, so yes, it is based in the Chicago area. It also happens to include one other county (Kankakee) and part of a third (Will).

It covers 3 counties which are all very different. It is not Chicago based.

        •  it is a wacko-shaped DIVERSE district (2+ / 0-)

it has only a tiny tip that is chicago. where you see the dense population under chicago are the r south suburbs of chicago. most of these are cook county, with just a tiny portion below the line where it says "steger" on the right above the pink line and "crete" below in will county.

the bulk of these chicago suburbs have significant black/hispanic populations...the white population trends toward being older, though the majority of both tends to vote democratic, though low turn-out can easily bring a gop win in these districts. This is a blue collar area that lost most of its good union jobs, but there are still strong teacher's unions here.

Will and kankakee counties have a  rural white conservative populations that tend to trend gop, except for the old downtown population of kankakee, which is minority-dominated.  Not many people here even work in chicago. If they do, they have to drive  nearly and hour to reach the very end of the commuter line which ends at at University Park.

so the top part of the district very much associates itself with chicago and considers itself chicago based. those below that dense cluster at the top do not tend to consider themself to be chicago based.

      •  Cook County may be Democrat, but a lot of it (2+ / 0-)

is very conservative Dems - especially outside the city proper.  Why do you think Lipinski keeps getting elected?

I don't have a feel for the gun issue in IL-02, but I think it is a mistake to make the election about that one issue.

Thank you!  These readers have no concept of this new district.

        •  If you don't have a feeling about it (4+ / 0-)

then why not look at the polling from the district? And yes, the gun issue is very much going to decide this election. It has already drastically reshaped the landscape.

new gun laws will curb the kind of violence they are seeing on the south side.  So, it doesn't surprise me the gun issue is big.

But what I meant was I don't have a feeling for how big the gun issue is comparatively.. Areas of the 2nd District have close to 50% unemployment rates among certain demographics.  That is one of the real reasons for all the violence - young black men without jobs who get into gangs as their only outlet. Yet no one is talking about jobs and economics.

If one of the other candidates besides Kelly gets smart enough to point out this fact, the gun law frenzy may well fade into a lesser issue.

        •  So then Halvorson should win the primary. (2+ / 0-)

I don't understand the argument here.  If the district is full of conservative Democrats than Halvorson wins the primary.

How are Kelly different from Halvorson on other issues?  When you're in a primary and agree on most issues you sort of have to highlight areas where you are different.
