  •  Beethoven's Ninth (1+ / 0-)

James DePriest, former conductor of the Oregon Symphony, died yesterday.  A friend of mine told this story about one of his concerts:

when my son Alex was 8 (i think it was), for his xmas present, i brought him to Pdx (we were living in Eugene) for ice skating at Lloyd Center, dinner & then a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, directed by James DePriest. the Maestro spoke a bit before the performance but, even better, he did this:

the bass section had bottles of booze & were swaying. someone brought out a bundle of music, tied up in rope. and the Maestro turned to the audience (you can see it coming) - "It's the top of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the basses are loaded."

Had to share this.  Thanks to TA Barnhardt for a great story.

    I'm still mad about Nixon.
