  •  The government paid to buy the hovercraft... (11+ / 0-)

...but not its operational costs. Also, the weather makes hovercraft operation conditional, too. The situation is obviously a complicated one, with all kinds of on-the-other-hand issues. If that weren't the case, it would have been resolved by now.

    •  We've got pleny of roads down ... (5+ / 0-)

... here, but folks still need to be evacuated by air (and sometimes die in a crash to boot).  That's the price you pay when you get too far from "civilization".  Even modest-sized towns located on an Interstate still need to use planes to fly out the sick or injured; a thunderstorm will ground the planes and a goodly winter storm will ground the planes plus make the roads impassable.  Anyone expecting 24/7 access to medical care has to live near it.

I suspect Congress could have the IHS provide a physician/PACs or two to the town for less than a year's maintenance cost on the road (roads don't hold up all that well in Alaskan winters).  But I rather expect this is about getting a road more than it is about getting reasonable access to medical care; the emergency-only road is just the camel's nose.

      •  Do you live here? (0+ / 0-)

If so, have you ever been to the Aleutians?

I've lived in Alaska for 33 years. I've walked a huge chunk of it and been to practically all of it. You are talking about an area 1/3 the size as THE REST OF THE ENTIRE FRICKIN' COUNTRY!

You're right. They are just 'indians'. Why don't we make a treaty with them to move to reservation where they can be closer to medical and other services?

Elitist asshole. You have no idea of what you speak.
