  •  Look, no one wants them, but for Pete's Sake, (0+ / 0-)

furloughs and RIFS (Reductions-In-Force) or cuts to job positions, occurred in cycles, constantly during the 1980's (I know, I worked for DOD, and was lucky to always escape the hatchet during RIFs, although I took numerous "furloughs.")  This is (or was) a very common budgetary tool.  That's all.

Bear in mind, I'm talking about numerous furloughs and RIF's during both of President Ronald Reagan's two terms, folks.  It's not the end of the world.  Again, IT IS A COMMON BUDGETARY TOOL!

The near hysteria that I see in some comments (not yours), is rather mind-boggling.

I'm guessing that it comes from folks who haven't worked for the federal government, especially DOD.

Another budgetary tool is "freezing wages."  The President did that several years ago.  Again, it is a common budgetary practice to do this.  It has happened time and time and time again, over the years.  I also had that happen to me (along with RIFs and furloughs).

Heck, many folks I knew were tickled with a furlough--it's extra time off.  Personally, I never knew anyone who suffered a major financial catastrophe over 2-5 days unpaid leave.  Seriously.

Yeah I told my relative not to worry about it too much, that it would be irresponsible for the "powers that be" not to make everyone aware of the possibilities.  Some of the people in his department who have been around for awhile said the last time it happened they were out for 2-3 weeks.  And you are right some people did think of it as time off.

I told him I doubted it would happen.  After reading the WhiteHouse.gov article I was reminded it's tax season!  Refund checks don't write themselves.  Those Americans looking for their refund checks are going to be sorely disappointed.  I don't think anyone in Washington is ready for that sort of backlash.
