I completely understand and agree that the white man truly screwed the native americans. Rounding them up and forcing them onto pre-designated land. That was a bunch of bullshit. But what do these vocal natives want us to do now? This occurred over a hundred-plus years ago - my mother's ancestors were not in America yet, but my father's ancestors arrived in the late 1700's. I get the feeling that many just want us to pack up our bags and all our belongings and move. I was born and raised in this country and it is just as much mine as it is the native Americans.

What I don't understand is how the native Americans, and those who support the native's plight, point fingers only to the white men who came and took the land from the natives. What about the wars, raids and battles between the tribes? There was just as much raiding, horse-stealing, women and children-stealing between the enemy tribes as there was from the white man. Yet this is never mentioned.

Look, historically man has always been nomadic, always coveting what others have. And those tribes, clans, armies, etc that have the strength to take from the weak do so. Doesn't make it right. It is what is and what has been. History cannot be changed. And this also includes native American tribes warring and taking from other tribes.

No one can change the past. No one. But what we can do is learn from history and work together for a more peaceful future living among one another. White men, black men, Asian, Mexicans, and so on and so on, are here to stay. I live in New Mexico and I see and hear rants like this all the time. And I also have many native friends who find this behavior completely unproductive and some are actually embarrassed when they see these rants. They know that we cannot rewind the clock and want to look forward to provide the best lives they can for their families.

Isn't the point that a Native American can school anti-immigrant activists about who's really "native" and who's not. You totally downplay all of the pain that colonization caused Native Americans. You should read People's History to get more education about it. Native Americans were nearly completely wiped out. They were given small pox intentionally. It was immoral and the history of broken treaties still is. Native Americans are among the poorest Americans because they were shunted off into reservations, robbed of their culture and language, and land. Need I go on? The rant is/was justified because a LOT of Americans are still in denial about this oppression and insist on making excuses for it.

The civil rights, gay rights and women's movements, designed to allow others to reach for power previously grasped only by white men, have made a real difference, and the outlines of 21st century America have emerged. -- Paul West of LA Times
