  •  The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (4+ / 0-)

Is still incredibly disturbing in places.  Then again, consider the subject....

    •  I got assigned that one post-college. (5+ / 0-)

An Auschwitz survivor a friend of my family is buddies with was cleaning out her fading-fast liberator husband's library. I was at her house for an unrelated reason and was offered a chance at anything I wanted from the shelves. I picked that book as one of the two I took. She thanked me for taking it because seeing the swastika on the spine had been getting to her and told me the one condition was that I had to read all of it.

(And yes, I do have a little note scribbled inside the front cover describing from who I got it and when, so whoever gets the book from me can research back from whence it came - she's one of the survivors who devoted their lives to educating people about what happened, so there's material on her personal experiences out there for some future reader to find.)

It took skipping around because I couldn't stand trying for a cover to cover read-through even with all the getting-through-distressing-things reading tricks I know, but I'm pretty sure I've made it all the way through now. Definitely not for a high school audience.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

I could hardly drag my nose out of it.  I read it cover to cover hardly stopping to sleep.  I was fascinated.

It wasn't assigned reading, the school had a program of selling inexpensive paperback books to any students that wanted them.  I think it cost me ninety-five cents.
