  •  My now 6 year old (11+ / 0-)

was teased relentlessly for being "fat" by some little snot in kindergarten. She was, at the time, in the 20th percentile for body weight. She has the same "curse" I do though, and is "curvy" even at her age.

Actually, this started well before kindergarten...I remember when she couldn't have been more than 3 years old she was in her carseat and just burst into tears. She was pinching and slapping her thighs-she said she hated them because they were "chubby".

I don't know where she gets it from. I go out of my way to model a positive body image for her and always tell her she's beautiful and perfect just the way she is (and it's true!) but it's like society has already wrapped their tenticles around her, and convinced her to hate her body.

My 10 year old niece IS overweight-but has always been a little chunker, ever since she was a baby. After her mother died (she was only 7 and it was totally unexpected  and awful) she was not taken care of the way she should have. She didn't get therapy, her dad fell off the wagon and started neglecting her, and she began to compulsively over-eat to self-soothe. Now she's dealing with the bullying -at school, and what horrifies me even more, within our own family who think if they shame her enough, she will just get skinny :(

The way we stigmatize adults is bad enough, but the impact this has on children, especially girls, is just unacceptable.
