    I don't want the textbooks for the next generation to be even more full of jingoism than they already are.  Speaking of TX writing textbooks, I remember one textbook I had in high school that compared the annexation and granting statehood to Texas to a prolonged courtship that ended in a final "consummation."  Many of my peers giggled at the somewhat graphic metaphors of Texas being a beautiful bride waiting for the wedding night.

      In defense of that passage, the U.S. actually did court Texas for statehood. But it wasn't by any means a one sided affair, if you will.
