    If John Paul I hadn't died after, like, a month?

      John Paul II. They were both young, reform minded popes. Had John Paul I had been blessed with a long life, I imagine he would have been the transformational figure that John Paul II is considered today.

        was more progressive than JP II. I agree that things really took a turn south with Ratzinger, but I don't think the institution of the church would have been in such a place that someone like Ratzinger could rise to be Pope if JP I had a few decades to shape it.

        Of course, this is all before my time and based on anecdotal stuff from my liberal Catholic relatives, so it could all be bullshit.
