    There is a similar situation in Yosemite with pricing out low income visitors. The entrance fee is $20 and they have closed down much of the lower budget housing options. ( cabins without baths )  I have been thinking about putting together a photo diary on the hike from Lake McDonald Lodge up to the Sperry Chalet. The trail head can be seen on the area map in this diary. Starting across the road from the parking lot at the lodge it is a really nice hike. I went up and back as a day hike a few years ago. The chalets were set up to be one day horse ride between them by the Great Northern Railway. There were originally 11 ( I think ) of which only two have survived to this day. They would bring wealthy tourists in on the train and then take them on a grand tour around the park on horse back. Staying each night at one of the chalets they were not exactly roughing it.
