  •  That's true (4+ / 0-)

and at the time (2003ish) I recall a lot of Dems giving up the label and embracing their true Republican selves.
(I'm a relative noob, only since '82. It was supposed to be a short term engagement.)

I think it's hellishly humid and if it weren't for my neighborhood and my kids I'd be long gone just for that reason.

          •  Georgia changing somewhat. (1+ / 0-)

I remember driving through Draketown, GA (just as tiny and rural as it sounds) during the Obamacare fight in 2009. I recall it was about noon (as we continued on to east Alabama and had perhaps the best catfish I've ever tasted for lunch). On the outskirts of Draketown we passed a hardware store with one of those signs-on-a-trailer that allows you to change the letters for your own message. It said, "Obama health care plan: nigger rig it." (Didn't bother to disguise it.)

A minute or two later, we hit downtown and there, on the sidewalk, were an African-American man and a white woman--kissing.

Even in Georgia, love is winning.

"The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals." - Barack Obama

              here in Wichita, Kansas,
              and we were invited, recently,
to a viewing of a PBS documentary
about the Supreme Court case called
              Loving v Virginia,
when state laws prohibiting interracial marriages
              were struck down.
              (The court struck them down
              the next day,
              and the ruling was unanimous.)

It came out in that film
              that interracial romance and marriage
has been going on for a long time.

              What's changing slowly are attitudes.

              The interracial romances and marriages
              should help change attitudes.

              But the subtle feeling
that "my" group is the regular folks,
while those others are those others,
that subtle feeling is being worn away very slowly.

              Seems to me.

while I'm on a soap box,
              segregated neighborhoods and schools
seems like a big part of the problem.
I'm now living in a black neighborhood,
              and it seems to me
              very different,
              and far away,
from the white neighborhoods where I grew up.

I don't know how to fix it,
I don't know how to get black folks into the other parts of town,
I certainly don't know how to get relatively prosperous white folks
              into a neighborhood like this.

      •  just like everywhere, I'm afraid . . . (0+ / 0-)

a beautiful place, except for the people . . .

        Fake Left, Drive Right . . . not my idea of a Democrat . . .
