    yellow rat snake, Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata.

    I've kept them as pets.

      She was quicker, and I admit to being a bit squeamish. I grabbed it by the tail and headed off my porch, she reached and snagged it from me, I snagged it back and threw it over the short fence. She had before it hit the ground. I was wasting my time, she has earned her name and snakes, mice, voles, rats, and other critters tremble when  they hear it.
