the Vatican is the ultimately the CEO of Catholicism, which serves over all the dioceses. No matter which of its subsidiaries fault, it's up to the parent company to sell assets to cover any costs associated with it. Let the Vatican sell a few pieces and distribute it to those dioceses.

Why they kept around so much pre-Christian sculpture ... It didn't seem compatible with their mission. I suppose these might be sold off at the auction house with few tears.

collection might make people wonder how much they stole. Their are still many works thought to gone forever from WWII, it'd be pretty embarassing if any turned up in the Vatican, especially if the original Jewish family is still alive. Not that i have any evidence, just a theory.

            •  Too true. (0+ / 0-)

I saw a documentary on the unit that was responsible for finding great works of art that had been hidden in salt mines and castles, all over the place. It was unbelievable seeing priceless works stacked up against each other. The units would locate the secret storage, catalog the works and their provenances, crate them and send them off on trains. It was totally fascinating.
