  •  It has always been thus in the military. My (16+ / 0-)

dad served in WWII entitling him to care at the VA and burial at Arlington National Cemetery. That's all anyone with less than 20 years of service gets. If you have 19 years of service that's all you get. 20 years is the dividing line.

Even so, you'll hear complaints from Congress about how much military personnel cost the taxpayers. But they've never met a weapons system they didn't love.

    •  However, I know of one person who had 16 (7+ / 0-)

years in in the Navy and has full retirement benefits.  He said it was at a time that the military was trying to down size and granted exemptions for certain things.  Didn't ask for specifics though.

Otherwise you're correct, the standard is 20 years before you get 'life' medical and full retirement benefits.  My dad was in the USAF from 1962 - 1983.

if you do, they give you a certain percentage for each disability. Once the disabilities total above 50% you get ALL healthcare free, PLUS a pension.
I'd tell you how much that is but I don't want you all t feel bad---100% plus "unemployability" = living wage. And then add Social security equals living wage plus living large.
