  •  Never got into Opera (3+ / 0-)

But I'm not into symphonies, either. Or ballet (despite having a total of 8 years of ballet and tap dance). They're all a bit too symbolic to me; too much depends on your own interpretation. And with opera in a different language singing so beautifully and so unintelligably to me, there's an awful lot of interpretation for me to get through.

The NYT's definition is great - and explains so much. In a musical the plot is advanced and defined by song and dance; in an opera the song and music is the real point. Which is not to say that I don't love musicals sung by opera singers (Sweeney Todd in Concert for a great example - Johanna never sounded so good to me).

I'll have to watch Passions - I've only heard a few songs from it, and given that it's Sondheim, you know the words are the important part (with the music buttressing and weaving its own part of the magic).
