    Oh please oh please.

    Bertrand Russell had a good suggestion a century ago: we should study Napolean's defeats and retreats, alongside how they were reported in the Paris papers. Because if you read those papers carefully, looking past the patriotic sloganeering, you can find the facts and implications to see what was really happening.

    As for standardized tests, I recently read that Bush's laws and funding, which moved us to a teaching-to-the-test paradigm, ripped out nearly half the arts funding in American schools.

    Financial history is particularly tricky, because so many Americans are ecomically illiterate

    I'm cynical about this one. I fear it's not a bug, it's a feature of our system. But now I'm getting myself het up.

    I expect, Mnemosyne, that we're mostly on the same page on these issues. Thanks for the tip - I should take a look at  Lords of Finance.
