It is sad, especially since this is far from the only place, online or off, with such disingenuousness from people who normally are outraged by such petty tricks. I have lost a lot of faith in the progressive sites and voices I used to trust. We were supposed to be not just about the stance we took on important issues, but also about approaching discussions with honesty and integrity.

A lot of people seem to be just as happy as the far right traditionally is with ad hominems, emotional appeals, buzzwords, an automatic assumption of bad faith for those who disagree, and actual pride in being ignorant of the facts. The ends apparently justify the means as long as you agree with the stance the person's taking.

Certainly that's not everyone, but still a depressingly common experience.

Kos' first diary on the Conn shooting.  I don't recall the exact words, but it was along the lines of "Fuck all gun owners.  Take all their guns.  Yes, it is a complete and total violation of their rights, but I don't care".

Seeing him write that he was willing to throw aside principles that I had come to believe that he had been standing on and campaigning for was a real let down and caused a loss that I don't think can ever be fully recovered.  I considered never coming back to this site again.  This was before I decided to become a registered user, which I did because I couldn't stand the let the spread of disinformation go unchallenged.

These gun related threads in particular have really made it clear that there is little, if any difference between the right and the left.  I guess this explains why the two are always claiming the same things about each other.
