  •  I have now heard this argument (19+ / 0-)

three different times: bin Laden, al-Awlaki, and now Dorner. How wide do we intend to spread the category of "Well this guy is so immoral and horrible that it's just fine to be lawless and barbaric in response to him?"

Now it's not just terrorists across the world, it's American citizens; now it's not just American citizens, but American citizens stateside. Exactly how far we going to push that boundary? Till only people who never get accused of anything get treated with fairness under the law?

Sorry Mr. Madison, no more nation of laws, not men. We now think the government should be able to do any damned thing it wants to us because obviously the government wouldn't do anything bad to us unless we're bad.  And obviously anybody accused of a crime must deserve whatever treatment they get.

Jesus Christ, where did the America I grew up in go to?

if necessary for years; if necessary, alone

    •  Exactly. Slippery, meet slope. (5+ / 0-)

The Overton window has shifted so far toward the authoritarian side that the response of government, media, and populace at the end of the movie Fahrenheit 451 — cheering the gunning down from a helicopter of some guy they think or are told is Montag, the protagonist — actually appears reasonable to many voices here.

You'd think that people who think of themselves as progressive would display more awareness of the undercurrent of authoritarian conditioning in some of their responses.

The Dutch kids' chorus Kinderen voor Kinderen wishes all the world's children freedom from hunger, ignorance, and war.

      •  Never before has a violent criminal been killed (0+ / 0-)

The slippery slope has begun! Clearly the next decades and centuries can only be a descent into a living hell. Human history cannot possibly progress now.
