  •  I love Brookside! (7+ / 0-)

My nephew is in the early stages of house hunting.  He was planning on buying in JoCo as his office is in Kansas (nightmare with state taxes) but with the insanity coming out of Topeka he's decided to buy in KCMO.

Kansas is driving out young professionals in droves, exactly the kind of people they used to attract for the school system, good roads etc.  Now Kansas is scaring the crap out of them.

We live in JoCo and while we are surrounded by lunatics, they at least knew to have great schools and nice parks! Now, with education funding being slashed, we don't even have THAT anymore! It was a trade-off to live here and we figured, "Heck, the schools ARE great, so we'll deal with these crazies!" Now--even that trade-off is gone. It's really pathetic. My oldest went K-12 through Shawnee Mission Schools and is now at KU, but we just pulled our youngest from SMSD to go to middle school elsewhere. Her class size was going to be 32 and she was getting lost in the crowd. I can't believe these people are happy with their crown jewel of a district (Shawnee Mission) suffering so!

      •  I am sorry for what has happened with your (3+ / 0-)

daughter's schooling. Unfortunately, this will be the new norm in JoCo. These people living in Olathe or OP, making $42,000/year really, truly believe they are "makers" and that their interests align perfectly with Charles Koch's, so why not vote themselves a hefty ($300) tax cut, all the while their children's class size increases to 40. They hate teachers and teachers unions, but forget that it was those very same teachers which gave tens of thousands the impetus to move to JoCo "for the schools."

My fiance and I live in the urban core of KC and originally were going to follow the tradition of fleeing to JoCo once we got close to having kids, simply for the schools (KCMO schools are a topic for another day). We have since decided that Brownbackistan is most definitely not for us; what is happening in Kansas is truly frightening. Real honest-to-goodness crazy people (this is not a pejorative - I truly believe these people are mentally ill) are running the state. We would be doing a disservice to ourselves and our children to live in Kansas at this point. Now it's either going to be stay put in KC and send our future kids to private school (if we can afford it) or move to Lee's Summit (shudder), a fate potentially worse than death.

I'm stuck here until I retire (only 9 years, but out here it will feel like eternity).

      •  I think the SMSD has always been overrated (1+ / 0-)

I went through my first two years of high school at Shawnee Mission South, and then my father was transferred to California so I finished HS there.  I thought I"d breeze through my last year but I was SO far behind, particularly in math, that I had to study my ass off to graduate and get good enough grades to qualify for admittance into the UC system.  It was horrible but thanks to the much better teachers I had in Orange County I made it.

The SMSD is much better compared to KCMO but it's still not that great - at least in my experience.  I think it just benefits from the horrible reputation of the schools across the state line.

skohayes, Dem Beans, I am a Patriot

experience at South and she was well-prepared for college. However, she was in all AP and honors classes in high school so perhaps there was more rigor, and she's in the honors program now at KU. She ran cross-country and really had a great time. But things have really changed. Indian Woods (the middle school) has really gone downhill, and I hear South has too--again, mostly because of a lack of funding for programs. I am a huge supporter of public schools and I would love for my youngest to be going to school in our neighborhood, but again, she was getting a little lost in the crowd and I feared she might fall behind. She would get pretty good grades (she's a good citizen in class and didn't give the teacher any real trouble), but when you'd ask her to explain something she was supposed to know and had GOTTEN AN A for doing, she couldn't. It seemed like she was just getting decent grades for staying out of trouble, and in a huge class, I didn't blame the teacher for not being able to spot the fact that she wasn't really learning. That's just too many kids!

But it wasn't always like this. My kids are 9 years apart, and the oldest really had a different experience--smaller classes and pretty good teachers. So, I'm just bummed that we couldn't stick with the district. And it's depressing to know that things are not going to improve anytime soon with these fools in charge!

I'm really glad you were able to get a better school experience in CA. I'm actually originally from there--born and raised and lived there for 33 years! The UC system is of course great so you must have done something right! :-) I really miss living in a blue-ish state. I don't miss the traffic on the 405, but I miss the beach and living where there is some degree of sanity!!!
