      Even if R's got the Senate back and kept the House they'd probably not even try at that point in 2015.

        Iowa requires that referenda be passed in both houses in two straight sessions and then go to the voters, so even if you have a Republican took enough seats from the Democrats in special elections, I don't think it could go in front of the voters until 2017. Right now the Senate is 26-24 Democrats.

        Gronstal has gone above and beyond over the last 6(?)  years to keep the constitutional referenda from coming up in the Senate. From what I've seen, if he personally were opposed to Marriage Equality, Iowa would currently have no same-sex marriages being made.
