But sweet jezus, the science is out there. Can't we look at cost-benefit analysis and harm reduction and fight our drug battles over the stuff that kills?

If I had my way, treatment for alcohol, tobacco, meth, opiates etc would be free and accessible everywhere, and these issues would be dealt with as medical and social problems not a war on anyone. I'd so much rather spend money on helping people voluntarily quit smoking or drinking, and improve their health, than on sending people to jail for a joint.

yeah-- no. Republicans don't believe in that either. Or helping people. Just cross that one off too.

+++ The law is a weapon used to bludgeon us peasants into submission. It is not to be applied to the monied elite.

    •  It's the "gateway drug" argument. (0+ / 0-)

People don't realize that in the cases where marijuana acts as a gateway drug, it's BECAUSE marijuana is outlawed and vilified.  People try marijuana, say to themselves "hell, that wasn't anything like as terrible as everybody says," and assume that everybody was wrong/lying about the worse drugs too.

Same as how kids who get lied to about the false dangers of masturbation are a lot less likely to take seriously the very real dangers of having unprotected sex.
