a pistol. Have you tried slicing the pie with a civilian legal shotgun or rifle? It's a pain in the ass, which could actually get you killed. A PGO shotgun (I had a Mossberg 500 equipped as such) might look cool but isn't as easy to use as you think.

Accuracy is always relevant. The myth is that you just point a shotgun at the target and the spread will get it. This isn't even close to true.

Shotguns for home defense should be 18. Why would you go more?

And for godsake don't use your handgun to stir your martini!

Seriously, I only recommend this type of shotgun for people strong enough (and practiced enough) to handle the kick. As you know, a pistol grip means you don't have the butt of the stock buried in your shoulder, which then requires much greater arm strength to control.  Definitely not the choice for the small or elderly. But I can handle it just fine.  I don't see any value in handguns other than public concealment.

To each his own I suppose.  Which, of course, runs counter to my original comment!  ;)

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

Shotgun spread really isn't that impressive unless you do something illegal like saw off the barrel.  Furthermore, inside a home, you're more likely to have trouble bracing and/or bringing the gun to bear than issues with accuracy from a proper stance.

Pistols are nice, small and compact and don't have much recoil.

A poster further down brings up alternative loads like salt, but I'm not really comfortable using less-than-lethal rounds... if you're not going to use a "lethal" round, why not just get a air taser rather than something you're not sure will actually stop an assailant?

but in my days living aboard my boat I had an Ithaca 12-gauge (Model 37 DS Police Special) as my boat gun.  I loaded with 1 round of bird shot followed up with slugs.

I actually used it to repel boarders one time, and I was glad of having that one round since that's all it took to convince them to leave.
