  •  It's Not Moral, It's An Instinct... (0+ / 0-)
Self defense is moral. The only danger my firearm poses is to those who would do me harm.
I truly do not believe that you can make a case, a debated case, that self defense is "moral" by any stretch of the imagination. Defending others, yes; self-defense by soldiers and police, yes, as their job includes being around to defend others; oneself in a non-police or war situation, not so much. It's an instinct, not a good moral decision, to kill in self-defense when one is not part of a dedicated fighting force on a mission, or protecting civilians.

Think Christ before Pilate. Think of the teaching that "one who saves his own life will lose it."

Now you probably are not concerned about Christian morality, or I don't believe that you would have made that statement. Your choice, of course, but don't give me broad sweeping, all-inclusive morality claims that you believe apply to all.

It's also been legal under English common law for as long as it has existed, despite whatever Christian morals also existed during the same time. I suspect it was legal under the Code of Hammurabi.
It is against the interests of a civilized people that an individual should act to harm others. It is appropriate for members of that civilization to protect themselves from such harm. They are protecting others from such attacks by doing so. The individual carrying out the attack is prevented from future attacks, and others who might be so inclined are also discouraged by the knowledge that the person they might harm has the legal and moral authority to protect him or herself.

You're saying self defense is immoral under Christianity, but that it's moral to delegate responsibility for your own protection?

      Fail.
