  •  Cong. Capito also wants to paint with a bit (3+ / 0-)

of a broader brush. She's already announced that she's running for the U. S. Senate in 2014; the seat that Jay Rockefeller has held since 1985. It will be an open seat next year because Jay is retiring.

    •  That sort of stance can "unclear the boards"... (0+ / 0-)

...and increase the likelihood of a potent "true believer" primary opponent.

I'm glad she's taking that position, but she is not immune from those people who will dominate the nomination process in West Virginia from "going a different way" if well financed pile of money (CfG) shouts RINO!! loudly and consistently over the next 12 months.

      •  She's definitely thinking ahead to the general. (0+ / 0-)

As you say, a "true believer" might stop Capito in the primary. Earl Ray Tomlin, our current gov in WV is no gem, but he's a Dem. In the 2011 special gubernatorial election, the situation you mention did happen.
There was a (relatively) moderate and very popular GOP WV Sec of State, Betty Ireland. Betty ran for gov in the 2011 special, but was beaten in the primary by a real teabagger, Bill Maloney. Earl Ray beat Maloney in a squeaker. I really think that Betty would have beaten Earl Ray in the general election if she'd gotten that far.
Of course, the potential downside is that if the nut takes out the moderate and then wins the general...........
