we don't need constant coverage where someone asks "so how stinky was it in there?" "were you like totally nauseous?"

    •  That's because today's (4+ / 0-)

'reporters' do not know anything but bodily functions.  And certainly not anything about ship systems.  Toilets on board are vacuum systems.  All connected.  Waste  (trash, food, glass, soda/beer cans) is compacted - no power, no compaction.

The crew should have been directed to break out the garbage bag lined trash cans right from the beginning, instead of waiting 2-3 days.  I would have been much more concerned with the germs and bacterias floating around on floors, carpets, than mere stinky-ness.

And if the passengers had it bad, I can tell you the crew areas were 10X worse.  I hope the crew was all given an extra $500 ea; but I doubt it.

Don't EVER go on a Carnival cruise!

      •  I'd never go on any cruise... (0+ / 0-)

I don't care for that mode of travel at all.

        •  IT has it's usefulness (0+ / 0-)

in certain places, and at certain phases & times of life.

We are no longer able to backpack across Europe, Central America, etc.

The point is to chose carefully, taking into consideration locations, access, treatment on board, safety, cruise line practices, smoking policies, treatment of crew & staff, ambiance, type of boat, capacity, environmental practices (still not 100% but better than they used to be) etc.

I found the sainted David F Wallace's essay quite obsessive and compulsive, full of attitude, dripping with condensation.  People who like to scornfully stick their noses in the air, at the plebeian masses who board a 'Carnivore' ship, shouldn't automatically think all ships are like that.

Want to travel the Panama Canal ?- the only way to do it is by boat!  Inspired by learning more about the building of the canal after reading, The Path Between the Seas we recently did so.

Have you ever gone on a ship for more than 3 days?
