    Is that it makes Congress even more the domain of the rich and privileged than it already is.  If you're, say, a lawyer or a journalist or professor or whatever, middle or upper-middle class, you can afford to trade that job for a congressional salary and serve your country.  If Congress gets paid poverty wages, the only people who will be able to take the job are those who are already rich as fuck.
