Despite having an officially majority caucus, Boehner knows that he can't get even 50% to pass his nutcase agenda.  There are still at least a couple of rational Republicans (a rare breed, indeed) who just might prevent that from happening.  Boehner also knows that it would be awful for his party if they did pass their agenda, and the American people learned first-hand just now bad their ideas are.

Boehner knows that if he did bring up reasonable, rational bills such as the VAWA for a vote, they would pass without problem.  And he knows that such an event is his worst nightmare, because they would pass with the majority of the votes for them coming from Democrats.

Here's the thing.  Republicans need the filibuster and other tools of obstructionism, because they know that if Democratic bills and ideas were enacted, it would soon become apparent to everyone not living in the Alternative Reality Generating Machine that these were good ideas.  Democrats don't need to do this, because their means of regaining a majority is to let Republican bills become law, and let people see how bad their ideas really are.

The real tragedy is not Republican nutcases.  (I call them Southern Republicans, because they are the same people who used to be Southern Democrats, and hold the same radical, reactionary, bigoted, anti-American views they did then.)

But the real tragedy is not them.  The real tragedy is spineless Democrats like Reid who give in to them for no reason.  The real tragedy is that Democrats are afraid to make their case in a decent manner.

The real tragedy is that both parties are in thrall to the moneyed interests who are destroying our country, our economy, our environment, and our democracy.

    Good luck to us all.

In Washington, whenever anyone does something wrong, everyone else gets punished.
