  •  The Pendleton murder illustrates part of.... (0+ / 0-)

    ....what's going on in Chicago.

With their leaders taken off the streets, some of the big gangs are splitting up into warring factions.

(It's just a small part of the reason for the violence, not the whole reason, but it's certainly true in the Pendleton murder that the culprits we're fighting another faction of the same gang.)

    Or, so I have read.

"Michael Moore, who was filming a movie about corporate welfare called 'Capitalism: A Love Story,' sought and received incentives."

    •  What's missing is an alternative (2+ / 0-)

Gangs exist because they fill some void. It is for the most part an economic void: too few accessible entry level positions in the legal, on-the-books economy. There are of course other voids that are filled: social association, protection from various other threats (almost always other gangs), etc. But with the economic void mitigated, the other voids become much more manageable.

There was this pervasive mythology during the 80s and 90s (and probably still exists today) that there is "no way a 'McJob' can compete with the (pick a gaudy number) that a young man can get running drugs." Having been all too well acquainted with the drug market in my youth, I can confidently say that the amount of money a low level "runner" made has always been inflated in this myth, the number of positions available at a given time almost as inflated.
