  •  Affording cheap crap (7+ / 0-)

No doubt there are plenty of reasons to sneer at Walmart's cheap crap. Nonetheless, it is a primary source of inexpensive goods for a large segment of the U.S. population. Unless there is some indicator that shows this population having taken its money elsewhere, I'd suggest that declining sales at Walmart would be a significant signal (were any really needed) that our overall economy is (still) in the toilet. Schadenfreude, enjoyable as it must be, ought not obscure that, IMO, more important point.

If 'cheap' is your primary concern, then dollar stores tend to be cheaper than walmart on a lot of things.

This is like comparing the smallest of convenience stores to a huge supermarket. It would be pretty hard to live on the dollar store inventory. Dollar stores offer a fraction of the sort of merchandise at Walmart, which carries a full range of clothing, foods, housewares, hardware, furniture, electronics, etc. There is little relevance to matching sales at these disparate enterprises. The most you might get from the consideration would be to underline my original point, which is that the economy is very bad—so bad that even Walmart might begin to seem too expensive.
