    if you assume there's something wrong with working for Citi, at all.  Or if it's structured in installments or whatever.  The evidence is that having the clause be Citi's idea (meaning, Lew wouldn't be giving up anything to get it), doesn't solve the problem, so it's just the same circular argument that the clause is a bribe.  Unless you're prepared to argue the clause is illegal, it doesn't get you anywhere, which it's not.

      And it's not about whether Lew worked for Citi.  It's about the implication of Citi giving him (or he demanding) the money if he took a high level government job.  That seems like a pretty odd contingency.

        Lew would appear to owe any further obligation to Citi, which I don't see as being the case.  

        And I don't think it's all that odd if you think about it from the perspective of Lew trying to soften the cushion of taking a drastic paycut.
