Too many people here misuse them though.

I very seldom HR someone, unless they flagrantly cross the lines set by Markos, and that means they're doing something destructive to the discourse on the site.

In that case, it's very important that we do HR them, so their behavior is noted and on record. That way, if the banhammer needs to come out (and sometimes it does, with disingenuous actors), Markos has the ammo he needs to justify it.

The problem is that people use HRs to voice disagreement, and that is explicitly not their purpose. A couple of night's ago I was in a thread where someone was challenged for an HR and they said, "Yeah, but I took that one personally, because I have a relative who...". That argument is exactly wrong.

HRs police the site for toxic participants, and liars, not people you disagree with, no matter how strongly.

HRing this diary initially actually did a service, because a bunch of people began doing research, and a couple finally found the actual evidence that proved the diarist's assertion. (The diarist should have found and posted the CSPAN link, and shouldn't have put the rest of us in this position, btw. So a little slapping about the head and shoulders was appropriate, IMO.)

By rescinding your HR, you're just proving that you're a sincere, constructive participant in the community.

So good job on both accounts.
