  •  The sad thing about those apps... (2+ / 0-)

...is that with more thought and effort, perhaps they could have been something educational instead of just being stereotyped and hurtful.

Several months ago some nasty apps showed up in the Google Play Store called "Make me Asian" and "Make me Indian".
Consider what it might mean if an app could truly show people what they might look like had they been born a member of a different ethnic group?  I think that the idea is interesting, and I do see potential value in it.

The problem, of course, is that the producer of those apps was lazy and just settled for crudely sticking the most simplistic of stereotypes on top of the pictures:  "Look at me, I have slanted eyes" seems like something out of the forties, and is not (and should not be) acceptable today.  I guess that developing a real morphing program instead of a cheap-ass racist cut and paste effort would have required real work.

    •  Interesting concept. There is software that (7+ / 0-)

ages people who have been missing for years. SPLC has a Teaching Tolerance class that is free to teachers. Something like that might be useful.  Even better, if they could be made up and go out in public. Remember Black Like Me?

Different version in a study not long ago on behavior toward the elderly. Done in NYC IIRC. Young actors and actresses were made up and dressed to appear ~70 +. They went out and about doing standard activities, appearing and acting the role of an elderly person. The study was designed to find out how individuals on the receiving end changed. The young actors got depressed, withdrew, and started responding very differently than they would normally. Those reactions were not needed for the elderly impersonation. Follow up interviews supported the changes were due to how the participants' feelings changed from being ignored, getting disrespectful treatment, etc.

Yet another verification that humans treated aberrantly will start acting aberrantly themselves.

    •  I am not sure most phones could even handle (0+ / 0-)

it as even with my Galaxy S3 most N64 games don't run at full speed and I bet that kind of morphing would take more power than a N64 emulator.  Also remember most phones, even the newest ones, only have 1GB of RAM (the S3 has 2GB which is very rare).  Perhaps the huge Galaxy Note could do it with it's quad core processor but that thing is huge.
