    But just think of the exploration budget which could get funded!  We could make it a public/private partnership to open it to all bidders.  In my mind's eye I can see the cash geyser already.

    We'd need to try to grab some meteors to crash into Mars for extra water as well.  More funding!  If we could find some extra oxygen to burn the "petroleum" we found, the CO2 would help warm the atmosphere.  What's not to like about the program?  The black gold rush would be on.

    •  I know this was mostly snark but think of the (0+ / 0-)

      price for that oil.  It might be a great way to fund research and such, but as someone once said, one has to ask not if they could, but whether they should.  I don't think human life is worth a drop of oil, let alone a gusher from Mars.

        About the only reason for exploring for petroleum on Mars would be to put to bed the question of whether or not all petroleum is biologically derived. Burning any form of petroleum found on Mars would be such a crime against the advancement of knowledge that it beggars the imagination.
