What blows my mind about the Gallup Poll is that South Dakota shows up as the seventh gayest state. WTF? The only places that have a higher percentage of LGBTs than South Dakota are DC, HI, VT, OR, ME, and RI. SD is tied with MA for seventh place at 4.4% How did North Dakota get 51st (least gay) but South Dakota is number seven on the list? South Dakota has a higher percentage of people out of the closet than California does. Are people in SD just more honest?
Maybe the gay Nortes moved south? Just a thought.  There is more population in South Dakota, isn't there? And your comment about the 200 person town with 1.7% rang true to me.

Google says SD has 833,000 and ND has 700,000 (according to the Census Bureau).

Both are less than a million. Montana has more empty space, though.

to my gay cousin Mary - who lives in Wyoming. My youngest sister says one of our cousins on Mom's side is gay, but he doesn't live in his hometown of less than 1,000.

North Dakota has a long tradition of exporting young people for many reasons.

But New York isn't on that list.

NYS might not show a higher percentage of gays...NYC probably would be in the DC range (or better), but NYC isn't the whole state -- and it's a huge state.

        •  It's really not a huge state. Just a lot of people (0+ / 0-)

          in NYC.

        •  Except (0+ / 0-)

There are other large cities in NYS, like Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Long Island (among others).  They might also have a large amount of gays living there.
