McCain rants is that he and Hagel are fellow Vietnam vets and were, previously, friends.

McCain is about as reliable as a viper. He'll bite and kill the person carrying him across the river, because that's who he is.  Friendship means nothing, if McCain can even the score against Obama by attacking another man's reputation.

that during the 2008 campaign McGrumpy said he'd be happy to have Hagel as his SoD (or SoS, forget which).

So what happened, Grumpy, between then and now to make him "not fit" for the office?

Besides Obama nominating him, of course.  Or maybe he said something in the interim to suggest he was less eager than McGrumpy to bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran.

What happened, as revealed by McCain's dogged focus one one topic in particular during Hagel's hearing, was that McCain is pissed off that Hagel turned against the Iraq war, particularly that Hagel previously dared to suggest that instead of "the surge" America should just get out of Iraq. McCain has come to see "the surge," which he supported like crazy, as the big savior of the Iraq war, as being the thing that makes all the death and destruction of the war justifiable.
