  •  Ignoring pain (0+ / 0-)

In June 1997, DH felt pain going up his left arm. He thought it was carpal tunnel from grasping the stationary bike handles while he exercised. He had been having pain for several months, whenever he was on the bike so he just associated it with exercising. He only got it checked because while we were at a birthday party, my girlfriend's DH, a neurologist, said he needed to have it checked. Thank goodness we did.

DH went in, his GP thought it was nothing and was about to let him leave when he changed his mind and scheduled him for a treadmill test. He flunked it. They did a scan and found his main artery was 90% clogged. He also had 3 other arteries clogged at 70%, 75% and 80%. The body is an interesting piece of work, his body was actually growing its own bypass of the section that was 90% clogged. Suffice it to say, he was scheduled within two months of the diagnosis for a quadruple bypass. He was 44.

The heart problem was unexpected because no one in his family had heart problems. Unfortunately, he did have the risk factors: high cholesterol (259),  high blood pressure, and being overweight. He was lucky he went to see the doctor before he had a heart attack. With the help of meds and exercise, he hasn't had a problem...I wish he'd lose some weight though...

We only had catastrophic coverage...yup, this was our catastrophe. Our out-of-pocket expenses weren't as bad as it could've been without health insurance. I think we paid about $10,000 on a $90,000-plus bill. Dug a hole in our savings and he lost a couple of month's worth of income.
