I'm of a similar age as you and have experienced similar instances of amazement at what has become to the generation that preceded us-- the boomers, per se. Born in 1960, I think I fall on the very tail end of that bolus of the US demographic but I've been close enough to watch it evolve, and I don't like or understand what I see.

How can it be that a "generation" whose mantra may have been "Peace, love and understanding" turn so viciously and fearfully rightward? How can it be that a generation born into the political and moral corruption of the Nixon administration be turning to the republicans, at bets, and to the teap party, at worst?

Sadly, I have no insights to share that might explain these phenomena. I used to go back to the small town in Iowa where I went to school to visit with former classmates and (now) former friends. "What's the Matter with Kansas" is, as you likely know, the title of a book by Chris Mooney that made quite a splash several years ago. But at the risk of sounding like an old fart, I'd suggest a sequel: What's Wrong with America.

"It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important." Martin Luther King Jr.
