View Diary: One Year after Limbaugh's Attack, 2471 Lost Sponsors is no Fluke (12 comments)

  •  Did Rush Limbaugh ever have 2471 sponsors? (0+ / 0-)

Calling every local advertiser a Rush Limbaugh sponsor whose randomly scheduled spot happens to fall in his show is ludicrous.  Sponsors pay a premium to have their messages associated with a particular show, to keep non-sponsors out of that time slot, and (usually) for "promos" running at other times of the day that say "tune in to the Rush Limbaugh Show weekdays at noon, sponsored by Jeff's Gun Shop" or some such.

An advertiser who tells the station "don't schedule my spot during the Rush Limbaugh Show" doesn't necessarily represent any lost revenue for the station; a lost sponsor, on the other hand, is a significant hit to the wallet. The 2471 number is therefore largely meaningless unless it is limited to true sponsors.

The true measure of a show's success is the number of stations that carry it, and the number of markets it's in. When WXKS dumped Limbaugh in Boston last year, rival WRKO immediately snapped him up. Even in a blue state like Massachusetts, Limbaugh still delivers the angry white men demographic, and advertisers interested in reaching that group are still going to buy his show. These people don't care about politics; this is business.

If you want to kill Limbaugh, the only way to do it is to offer his listeners something they'll like better.  Boycotts only give him free publicity, and in radio there is no such thing as bad publicity.

    •  any idea why (5+ / 0-)

one of these media companies would threaten a lawsuit if our action has no impact on their bottom lines?

Thank you, Richard Myers. We'll finish it for you. http://stoprush.net

      •  For the free publicity, of course (0+ / 0-)

This is show business. The bigger the audience, the more money it makes. Of course they'll threaten to sue; it doesn't cost them anything, and it might get them a few extra headlines.

    •  just heard U New Mexico ticket offices ad on rush (0+ / 0-)

      yesterday.

i doubt they asked to be on his show. more likely they're filling spots that would have been taken by advertisers who aren't there anymore.

limbaugh and RW radio is completely political. he's still top turd in the RW radio toilet but i doubt if that 3 hours is anywhere near as valuable as it used to be in most parts of the country. a lot of those business decisions are turning into political ones thanks to the boycott.

they're doing a lot of that- shifting ads around- and filling his spots with free public services announcements. whenever a local sponsor pulls their ads from his show or asks not to be on his show the station has to scramble. and management feels it.

a lot of advertisers contacted never knew they were on limbaugh. they might end up paying a bit more when their ad gets shifted on to his show but do they know that? i know there are companies with asshole owners who want to be on limbaugh but in blue areas there might not be enough who want to be associated openly with his hate and lies if someone is actually paying attention.

limbaugh is a crucial part of national and local GOP strategy. their station owners and mangers and local talkers and content are often tied in with the local GOP. they get tossed from one then some local republican Elizabeth Warren-hating  Scott Brown-loving station will gladly take him. especially if the GOP or heritage foundation guarantees them some paid programming, etc to make up for their boycott problems.

      •  There aren't many local station owners in Boston (0+ / 0-)

...and Entercom, which is the owner of WRKO, isn't one. It's a publicly traded (i.e. Wall Street-owned) corporation with headquarters in a Philadelphia suburb (see http://en.wikipedia.org/...).

That's what radio looks like today; most of the "mom-and-pop" station owners are long gone, except in the smallest markets. Station managers may or may not support the GOP, but they take their orders from corporate. No one at corporate gives a rats' ass about Scott Brown, unless he can be used to bring in more revenue.  It's all about the money. The right-wing message sells; when that ceases to be true, stations will flip to something else.

There are signs that's already started to happen; sports talk seems to be gaining market share at the expense of political talk.

    •  PS i just heard teabagger rep Pearce (R- NM) on (0+ / 0-)

the Limbaugh morning local show lying all over the place to tens of thousands of new mexicans about how the dems and obama are to blame for this (GOP gives them a budget and Obama doesn't like them!).

and callers freaked out about obama releasing all those prisoners! lets impeach, and on and on. theres no attempt to correct by pearce or the host- it's free advertising for the teabagger GOP while people are trying to get a traffic report, on the station that plays the UNM Lobos games, with no correction or reciprocal chance for dems on the same station.

the other day it was the sec of state for the GOP Gov calling for callers to hound their state reps to pass the Govs legislation (probably ALEC).

those stations are primarily political and the biz is just icing.
