My mother always baked a cherry pie for Washington's Birthday.
It's all the things that she did to mark certain occasions making them special that have given me warm, lifelong memories of childhood and home and love.

Today's dinner for me will be peanut butter on toast with milk.
Mr.AzBlue wants soup, so he'll open a can.
Neither of us feels like eating much, always a good thing!

I've been craving pie so badly for awhile now, and yesterday at the farmers market I found a new stall that sells fruit pies. I'm going back next Sunday to get one, and I plan to eat the whole thing before Tuesday. :-)

She grew up on a farm and had 7 older siblings, one of them a girl.

My Aunt Helen was relegated cakes and my mom's job was pies, so they both baked their entire lives.

Funny memory, was after my mother died, Mr.AzBlue, Mary Lou and me realized how much we would miss my mom's pies.
It was her crust that was special and all the times that I helped her bake, I never had her teach me how to make crust - I always prepared the fillings.

So, one Saturday afternoon, I  was determined to figure out her pie crust and it was a lot of fun, actually, but also a lot of work.
I practiced crust for pasties and Mr.AzBlue and Mary Lou prepared a variety of fillings.
The first few were edible, but the crust wasn't very good.
But by the end, I finally figured it out and it really was like my mother said - it's the feel of the dough.
It took me a bit to figure out the 'feel'.
We froze most of them and the ones that weren't very good, we just tossed the crust!
        It's a fun memory.

        Pasties!!!

        •  For me it was Grammy's pies. (3+ / 0-)

Mom (her daughter) never baked much, though she was a great cook otherwise. But Grammy always made pies. Sunday dinners at their house we always had pie for dessert, and sometimes (especially on holidays) there were two or even three different kinds of pie. I have really happy pie memories, and it sounds like you do too. :-)
